The unglamorous checklist behind every smooth shoot day

Ask anyone what makes a shoot day feel effortless and they will talk about the director, the light, the cast. They will not mention the parking permits. But ask any producer, and they will tell you the truth: smooth is a paperwork word.

Our checklist starts a week out — locations confirmed in writing, call sheets with real travel times, batteries cycled, media wiped and labelled, releases printed, lunch ordered for the crew size we actually have rather than the one we budgeted in March. Boring on paper, priceless at 6am.

The second half of the list is human. Who needs a quiet word before their interview? Which location neighbour gets a knock and a thank-you? A calm set is a fast set: actors relax, the crew takes creative risks, and the day ends on time with the shot list finished instead of negotiated.

None of this photographs well, which is exactly the point. When the behind-the-scenes looks boring, the film gets to be interesting. That is the trade our producers make on every single job, and we would not have it any other way.
