Colour is not decoration. It is the final rewrite of the film — the pass where separate scenes shot weeks apart become one continuous world with one emotional weather system.
Take the night-market commercial we graded last spring. The footage was technically fine and emotionally flat: sodium streetlamps fighting our tungsten units until every shot argued with the next. The grade did not add beauty; it imposed agreement — one amber thread pulled through forty setups until the whole film breathed together.
“The grade does not add beauty. It imposes agreement.”
Or the documentary, where the grade went the other direction: restraint. The temptation with powerful testimony is to warm it, to help the audience feel. We stripped the look back to something almost ungraded, because honesty was the aesthetic and anything else would have read as persuasion.
The lesson we keep relearning: grade for the story, not the showreel. A look that draws attention to itself is a look that failed. When the audience remembers what the film felt like but cannot describe what it looked like — that is the grade finding its voice.
